New Lorts Pieces Introduced At High Point

Lorts introduces new case pieces at High Point that were an expansion of their existing transitional line that has been growing in popularity since it was originally introduced. Designers have been requesting more pieces that have clean lines, so these were developed in response to those requests. These transitional pieces can move from more contemporary to a classic styling depending on how pieces are specified to be distressed, finished, and waxed.

The Transitional Trestle Dining Table Top (#2103) and Base (2104) is shown in a new finish that has debuted at this Market—Portobello. Portobello has a metallic silver undertone and is a medium to light finish, which includes terra cotta water spotting to give a weathered, organic feel. It has been extremely well received.

The Transitional Table Base that Lorts introduced (2106) can be used with their existing round table tops, but is shown in photography with their new Transitional Square-to-Round table top (2105). It is also shown in the new Portobello finish.

The Transitional Television Cabinet that they introduced is both transitional in style and also a smaller scale than their existing TV Cabinet. It is shown in the Graystone finish.

In addition, this Market is the first time that Lorts has shown the transitional take on one of their best-selling pieces—the 48” cocktail ottoman.

The two upholstery pieces included are for the To The Trade Line Jordan Spencer by Lorts that was introduced at Las Vegas Market. The 821 sofa is shown in bleached canvas with a bench seat and nailhead detailing, with wood finished in Fruitwood.

The 995 Chair is shown in Tufted Navy Leather, in the Old World finish.

Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery is proud to carry the Lorts products for our clients.

Wood Is Making A Comeback

Do you remember the days of knotty-pine basements and wood paneling in the den? If I recall correctly, it was a 70s thing. Then when we bought a house with paneling in the 90s, the first priority in a redo was to throw out those awful paneled walls. A recent article, Wood Design Focus: Kindling Comfort, in "Contract" magazine by Stacy Straczynski suggests wood for walls is back. Maybe, the only inhibiting factors are the economy and price.

Straczynski writes "... wood has taken root against today’s tight recessionary budgets to expand beyond its traditional use in the corporate sector. Now, wood is cropping up more frequently as a design staple in hospitality/restaurant, education, and healthcare projects, as well as in contemporary architectural structures..."

It's making a comeback because it's visibly green and manufacturers have made changes in the products that meet LEED standards. "The increase in FSC certification, renewable resources, and low- and non-VOC adhesives and finishes has played a big role in bringing this seasoned material back into the limelight as a viable, sustainable option. "

Straczynski tells us that not only does wood make a room feel warm, but is associated with comfort and quality. She then goes on to discuss which colors are being used in design. Gone are the dark woods. Now demand is for lighter hues and something called ceruse. Ceruse, I discovered, is achieved by applying a white material to the wood which is absorbed by the grain. "Known in Britain as “limed oak,” the finish was popular throughout the Art Deco era and employed by notable midcentury modern pioneers including Jean-Michel Franck and Paul T. Frankl. A version of the technique, with a whitened grain contrasting against a black stain, was widely imitated in the 1950s."

It seems the only thing holding back wider use of wood in design is the economy.

World's Ugliest Sofa

NY Times' readers on the 14th may have noticed (how could you not) the ugly sofa made from stacked books.

Jeff Daniels stars in "Paper Man" a movie about a blocked writer who will do almost anything to keep from writing, including replacing a loathsome floral-patterned sofa with copies of his dud first book.

We are looking forward to the movie.

Use Twitter and A Blog For Your Marketing

If there's one question Mike gets asked the most, it's this one: "Do Twitter and a blog really lead to increased business?" Hubspot, a report at eMarketer, shows that
Among business-to-consumer (B2C) small and medium-sized companies studied, more than one-half of those using Twitter generated double the median monthly leads of non-Twitter users. That result held across company size.
For those of you with no marketing program or just waiting for referrals, by using Twitter and forming a community of followers, the study showed that you can double your leads.
Companies with 100 to 500 followers generated 146% more median monthly leads than those with 21 to 100 followers. Beyond the 500-follower mark, though, there was no further gain.
Blogging also increased leads, but here content and frequency of posting was critical.
Businesses must produce enough content for their blog to kick off growth in leads, which starts with about 24 to 51 posts. Blogs not only promote engagement but they also help companies increase the number of pages they have indexed by major search engines. HubSpot found that more indexed pages on Google also translates to more leads. Every 50 to 100 incremental indexed pages can mean double-digit lead growth.
The lesson is clear. The simplest and lowest cost way of increasing leads is using social media. It can be time consuming, but it is worth it. Happy blogging.

The ChiliPad

First, there was the Sleep Number Bed, you and your spouse could each select the softness or hardness of the side of the bed you sleep on. Now from Chili Technology, comes the sleep temperature bed. You and your spouse each select the temperature. My husband likes piles of covers and sleeps cold. I continually throw off the covers. Even with the door to the deck open, I'm sweating.

Here's how the Chili/Bed with a ChiliPad works:

Why not just use a dual-control electronic blanket? The electronic blanket cannot cool and there nay be health concerns because of ELF (extremely low-frequency) magnetic fields given off by the device.

U OF Nevada, Reno May Close Interior Design School

The state of Nevada has a law that says in order to practice interior design in Nevada, professionals must have a four-year Bachelor’s degree and pass an exam.

The 8,300-square-foot center is the first LEED accredited building constructed on the University campus. Photo by Jean Dixon.

The University of Nevada, in Reno, is responsible for turning out most of the working interior designers in Nevada. Now, prompted by budget cuts, this program is targeted for elimination.

Apparently, the need for future interior designers is great for the United States Bureau of Labor, expects the interior design field to grow 19 percent from 2008 to 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. There is an interior architecture program at UNLV , but it is very different from interior design and only graduated seven students last year.

It seems this situation might be like our government passing a law requiring all cars to run on sunlight, yet not having a clue how to accomplish the mission.

SERA Receives Honorable Mention For p:ear

The winners of the second annual competition for the Inspirations Awards were announced on April 8. The Inspirations Awards celebrates leadership in socially responsible design among commercial interior designers and architects. Honorable mention went to SERA Architects in Portland, Oregon for their collaborative design to give p:ear, in Portland, a permanent home.

"p:ear builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth, ages 15 to 24, through education, art and recreation to affirm personal worth and create more meaningful and healthier lives." Each year their programs serve more than 350 homeless and transitional young people.

SERA had this to say about the project:
“As a designer, the biggest benefit of doing pro bono work is giving back to our community in the most direct way possible—sharing our design services to those who don't typically have financial access to them...The design of p:ear’s permanent home has made them more visible to the community, generating a buzz around their programs and welcoming the public in for gallery openings and events.”
Congratulations SERA!

New From Wallpaper Collective

You know that wallpaper is making a come back. The public wants a wall in their home that isn't plain or painted a wild color. They want something contemporary or one wall that is striking in a big, bold print.

I've been meaning to mention Wallpaper Collective and my memory was jogged this morning when I received from them a notice of new designs. First, though, Wallpaper Collective offers Artisanal wallpaper. The Wallpaper Collective is on a constant quest for the most interesting, clever, hip and beautiful wallpapers they can find from artists from coast to coast in the United States, and throughout the world. Artists who may make small batch productions of gorgeous papers.

Here are three of their new designs:

MS. TREAT - whose love of carnivorous botanicals influenced Darwin's work,
has a luscious wall of Pitcher Plants and mischievous Venus Flytraps (and perhaps an ant or two).

MRS. WARD - who developed her passion for microscopy by magnifying and drawing bugs, blends late-Georgian silhouettes with a curious menagerie of over-sized insects.

MME. JEANNE - a French dressmaker-cum-Sicilian naturalist (and who invented the world's first aquarium), has her love of the sea reflected in an elegant, ascending mollusk scallop.

How about this wallpaper from the website of Aimes Wilder's Analog Nights in Chocolate:

or Christopher from Grow House Grow:

Time For Outdoor Living

That big, bright ball of light hanging in the sky, today, is the sun. With the cloudy and cool weather we've had lately, many of us have forgotten what it looks like. When the sun comes out we start thinking of using the outside again and that means outdoor furniture.

Two interesting articles online on Friday: Jean Patteson described how More color, better value are the trends this year in outdoor furniture and Melissa Rayworth wrote that Now's the time to do more with exterior spaces.

Patteson quotes Jackie Hirschhaut, spokeswoman for the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) in High Point, N.C. who says that makers of outdoor furniture are countering the gloomy economic scene with more color. Here's a hint of what you'll read:

...collections for spring and summer focus on "dazzling color to brighten our moods, plush comfort to ease our tension and increased value to minimize the impact on our wallets."

Cheerful reds and yellows are key colors for 2010, along with calming shades of leaf green and watery blue.

Rayworth helps us with the smaller spaces, the small balcony off the bedroom or the terrace that's part of the new condo. She believes those small spaces can be intimidating and offers some

...great design strategies for turning even the most unexceptional deck or patio into an inviting space for outdoor entertaining this summer.
Her design suggestions cover the gamut from flooring, color, wall decor, lighting and greenery.

Best Interior Design Game

For the young budding interior designer, Bonniegames.com has introduced a free, online, interor design game. The player gets to design Cherry's room before her friends come over. If her room is not ready she will not be able to go out. Here's my try:

I added the window, added matching pillows and bedspread, chose the bed and yellow sheet, bookcases and picture above the bed. I would have liked to change the wall colors to a gray or yellow, but couldn't find the right button. I am sure many, more talented can make this a real show-stopper. Try your hand at it.

"The Interior's New Clothes"

Check out Jason Ball's latest post at Insight Into Design:
I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Anna Solcaniova King, curator of Anka Gallery, on an original and unique art installation that might be a first in the Portland area. "The Interior's New Clothes" mixes the two worlds of fashion and interior design. The concept is simple, design the space as if it were a sophisticated loft and use fashion as wearable art to decorate the space. The resulting design is one in which couture and clothing accessories are seamlessly integrated into three room settings - a living room, dining room and bedroom. As a designer, my goal was to create three well-designed room settings in which the wearable art is used in such a way that it causes the viewer to pause and take note of each distinct piece as part of the cohesive whole.
This was part of First Thursday and we were pleased to be able to participate by providing some furniture for the event:

Take A Look, Again, At Libby Langdon

In September 2009, we posted about Libby Langdon, nationally known interior design expert. We were intrigued with here videos and with her homepage where you can see how she markets herself. Many interior designers we work with are fuzzy on marketing. Either they don't know how to market themselves or say they rely just on referrals. The latter may be true, but how do newcomers to our area find them?

Libby Langdon is the topic today because Libby Langdon, recently visited the High Point University campus as part of a regional meeting through "WithIt" - Women in the Home Industries Today.
Langdon, formerly of High Point, is a designer on HGTV's "Small Space, Big Style" and makeover guru on "The Rachael Ray Show." During her HPU visit, she presented "Libby's Wild and Wacky Path into the World of Interior Design," which included details about how she got started in her career, as well as learning experiences, struggles and successes, and more.

Bridget Otto Thursday

Yes, seems like only yesterday that we celebrated Bridget Otto Thursday. Once again the lovely Bridget writes about our friends in the interior design business in Fine Prints.

When is it okay to put together two different prints or stripes and prints? Bridget A. Otto talks to Jim Yockey at Linde Ltd, a to-the-trade-only designer showroom near the Pearl. He suggests taking the scale down of one of the patterns. Kimberlee Jaynes of Kimberlee Jaynes Interior Design advises using contrast to play off one pattern to the next. Sharon Tjader of Design Concepts of Oregon suggests using tiny muted prints that look almost solid in your design as a place for your eyes to pause.

So far I don't have a link to the article. Here's the link to Bridget A Otto.

Internet Sales Set to Grow

Internet sales have been flat for the last couple of years and that's not bad because retail sales for most of us have been down substantially. Now, a just released new study from the US Census Bureau’s is estimating online sales to grow this year by 12.7%! Yowsers, that's good news. We all hope that brick and mortar stores do half as well. Here's the estimate for the years 2010 through 2014:

If you are a retailer you may be interested to know that online buyers have been trained well the last few years.
“During the recession, online consumers honed their Web research skills, searching for coupons, comparing prices and finding just the right product to fill a particular need. It appears these lessons are staying with them even as their personal finances begin to improve.”
That means that your clients and potential customers are more educated and street smart. Not only are they doing research on the web, but they are posting reviews of you and your shop. That also means that you need to be found online and you need to share what you know to achieve credibility in their eyes.

Here's how it worked for us. Just the other day a couple from Chile visited our store and when asked how they found us said, "Online!"

Outdoor Living

"The Oregon Women's Report" carries Outdoor Living Spaces On A Budget by Erika Weisensee in which the author lays out some affordable ways to make your outdoor space more livable. I especially liked this tip:

• Have a focal point for your outdoor living space. Larger focal points might include a fire pit, or colorful shade umbrella, while smaller (and less expensive) ones might be a pot of showy flowers or a cool lantern.

While we're on the subject of outdoor furniture, I came across Andreu World which is introducing a very nice outdoor furniture collection.

Get The Lead Out!

Did you know come April of 2010, it's going to be more expensive to remodel or repaint your home? The EPA has established new regulations with regards to the removal of lead paint which will affect homeowners with homes built anytime pre-1978.

Our home is near Grant High was built in 1929. From now on sanding or remodeling will have to adhere to new rules. An overview is available at Homesavvi in a January article titled Lead Paint. Oregon.gov has TIPS FOR REMODELING AND FIX-UP that you will want to read before undertaking your next DIY project. Interior designers and contractors have been studying the new rules for some time.

Here are some tips that stand out for me:
  • The Oregon Lead-Based Paint Program certifies professionals who inspect homes for the presence of lead-based paint and others who can identify or remove lead paint hazards.
  • If you choose to hire someone to do the work, be sure you are dealing with someone who will use lead-safe work practices and who is registered with the Construction Contractors Board. Please see the list of certified companies to identify abatement professionals that test or work on individual residential properties.
  • DO NOT Power blast, dry scrape or dry sand because these practices create lead dust.
  • DO wear personal protective clothing and equipment, such as eye protection, rubber gloves, and a respirator.
This new law seems to be as stringent as the asbestos removal laws. Lead paint must be disclosed to potential buyers when selling your home.

I'm certain the painting contractor will charge me more to comply.

ZoLi Products BPA Free

Oregon had a chance to protect our children by banning the use of bisphenol-A (BPA) in baby bottles and sippy cups, but the effort failed in the Oregon Senate. BPA is a a potential endocrine-disrupting chemical found in baby's utensils. The FDA said it had "some concern" about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children.

BPA has been banned in Washington. The chemical is used in the lining of canned products, and banning the chemical, opponents said, would hurt Oregon food processors. They said the market has already responded to the use of BPA. 90 percent of the bottles and sippy cups offered in Oregon now BPA-free. Proponents said said the state should err on the side of caution when it comes to children.

I am glad to see that the market has responded to family concern over the use of BPA and thought you would be interested in these new products from ZoLi:

Need Plumbing Supplies

Here's a blog I like: Need Plumbing Supplies. Not only does the site focus on the latest Moen kitchen and bathroom faucets, but offers great video advice on DIY projects. Frankly, Mike and I have just not been very good at fixing anything to do with plumbing.

We are the kind of people that find it easier to place a bucket under the sink in our basement than actually get in and repair the leak. We try to avoid Drano and Liquid Plumber for our drains on the advice of Sewer Rats, the people we call in Portland to fix the clogs. However, Need Plumbing Supplies has a nifty video that gives us confidence that we can be successful in this regard.

Here are some of the videos they offer for free:

Gladding McBean Pottery

Reprint from Home Accents Today's The Landfair Retail Focus:

Market Street building in San Francisco, using terra cotta trim.

Earlier this month I posted about Elements International. The Portland company decided to open their "To The Trade" showroom floor to the public prompting me to ask on Linkedin "To The Trade Only - Is That Still A Valid Business Model?" I received a large number of responses and invite you read them and add your own thoughts to the mix.

I asked Karen Ingalls about her store and top sellers. She pointed out Gladding McBean (GMB), maker of Architectural Garden Pottery. I had never heard of the company and nothing has ever been written about them at "Home Accents Today."

The company began over 125 years ago when pottery clay was discovered in Califorrnia. Initially, the clay was used for sewer pipe, but over the years GMB expanded its line to include fire brick, roof tile, chimney pipes and ornamental garden pottery. To this day it still provides the red tile for roofing at the prestigeous Stanford University.

Today GMB is an maker of architectural garden pottery. "Gladding has combined the old world craftsmanship with new technology such as laser scanning and sophisticated computer aided design to provide customers with infinite creative possibilities." Ingalls has singled two pieces for you readers of this blog:
