Five Hot Home Décor Trends for 2014

Sarah Rufca reporter for the Houston Chronicle shares some of the hot new trends for 2014. I happened to notice that some of our vendors are featured:

The Loveseat For Smaller Spaces

Apartment Therapy is trying to suggest there's a new sofa type out there for small space dwellers.
They write, "New Traditionalists Unite! Not every small space dweller is into modern lines or minimal, neutral textures. We're sure there are plenty of you living in pint size palaces who would like to embrace classic lines mixed with color, texture and pattern when it comes to your sofa style. Well, here you go - seven small but not-too-safe sofas to consider that all clock in at under 70 inches..."

In one place a picture of a small sofa is called a "sofette." That's is just another for a loveseat and we've had loveseats for years. Bernhardt and Bernhardt Interiors calls them Loveseats. Here are a few examples of loveseats:

News From Bernhardt Furniture

Regenia Payne has joined Bernhardt Furniture as upholstery fashion coordinator in the brand’s residential upholstery division.

In her new position, Payne will develop upholstery fabric and frame correlations based upon fashion directions and will manage the company’s High Point showroom upholstery presentations.

Payne reports to Roger Turnbow, vice president of merchandising, residential upholstery at Bernhardt, Lenoir, N.C.

“Regenia’s extensive experience in upholstery design, merchandising, and fashion will be a valuable asset in positioning our brand as a design leader in residential upholstered seating,” said Turnbow.

Trends: Headboards Lend A Romantic Look to Bedrooms

Sue Doerfler, The Republic at azcentral.com shares her reactions to April High Point Market in High Point, N.C.. She writes, "...furniture makers introduced collections that featured glamorous, fully upholstered beds and statement headboards."

In the article she mentions Bernhard's new London Calling Collection with these words, "Furniture maker Bernhardt's London Calling collection perhaps made one of the boldest statements with its vintage brass Kingston four-poster bed and matching side tables."

Classic English style that mixes tradition with a bit of unexpected Carnaby panache enters the American vernacular today in Bernhardt Interiors—a permanent, eclectic collection totaling some 300 pieces of high design furniture.

Among 75 new case goods and occasional pieces, wood and metal forms and surfaces are dressed out in a razzle dazzle mashup of golds—shiny 70s brasses, scumbled gold-leafed woods, satiny jewel box cabinetry. The reflective golden metals appear both serious and playful — and will offer more visual interest to the rest of a homeowner’s decor.

Some 25 new upholstery pieces are shown in classic English types of covers. There are velvets, flaxes and linens, layered patterned cut cloths, and fabrics with a soft metal glow to them. A new color palette is composed of pomegranate, teal, spruce, greige, and... gold, basic black’s shiny cousin.

“London has always been recognized as a hotbed of really great style,” says Ron Fiore, Bernhardt creative director. “From the punk culture of the 70s to the 80s and even today, London is where we like to think eclecticism originated. We’re bringing that energetic, classic English suavity into our whole-world approach at Bernhardt.”

What To Know Before You Buy A Sectional

Becky Dietrich, Interior Designer, and Houzz Contributor has written a fine and detailed article that just appeared in Forbes Magazine titled "What To Know Before You Buy A Sectional."

She concludes her article with this advice, "Don’t even consider sectional shopping without a meticulously drawn floor plan. The good news is that the right sectional will bring comfort, style and function to your room that few other furnishings can provide."

Apartment Therapy toured High Point Market recently and gives us "...a glimpse of what's on it's way in the coming months..." in 12 different sofa offerings. Included in that list is one of our lines. 

Bernhardt, says Apartment Therapy, went a little wild with a hide upholstery. A luxurious choice that also has a rustic side - perfect for a cabin chic look.

Designers Are Once Again Going For Gold

Mary Beth Breckenridge in the Akron Beacon Journal predicts Gold, which has been on the decorative outs for a couple of decades, is making its way back into home decor — this time in a burnished, warmer form.

"Gold and other yellow metallics are showing up in furniture, lighting, even fabrics and wall coverings. They bring a little glimmer to a room, a little understated glamour.

"This isn’t some ornate casbah look or a return to staid Colonial style, however. Today’s gold metals are soft and subdued, often with the complex look of handcrafting.

"Doty Horn, who runs the color marketing firm ColorVoyant in Holicong, Pa., thinks gold’s resurgence is tied to the economic recovery, but not because of its association with money. Gold is in the yellow family, which she said is a happy, positive color. “It’s a sign of optimism,” she said.

"Rose gold is especially popular now, Horn said, its pinkish hue adding complexity without the hardness and rustiness of copper. Brass is coming back, too, although in a lower-luster finish.

"Indeed, “the finish really is key,” she said. Shiny gold is out. Gold with a more complex, matte finish is in.

"The reappearance of gold is also an indication of the renewed popularity of traditional design, albeit with a fresher, more modern twist, said Jennifer McConnell, vice president of design for furniture maker Pearson Co"

Here's an example of the new look, the Chiltern Buffet from Bernhardt.The buffet has a gold leaf finish and four doors with inset antiqued mirror panels with rosettes.

Salon Features The Look Of Metal

The AP writes about the new look of brass, copper, bronze and nickel in this fall's decor.

The finishes are warm, without the kitschy clash of some previous go-rounds. You'll see these softer, richer-looking metals -- joining gold and silver on the decor stage -- as accents on accessories, as furniture embellishment and as a brushed finish on textiles.

It's a classic look that can work in both traditional and contemporary spaces.

16th Annual Pinnacle Design Achievement Awards

The ASFD, American Society of Furniture Designers, has named the finalists for the 16th Annual Pinnacle Design Achievement Awards. The winners will be announced at a dinner at the High Point Market Monday, Oct. 24.

"The judges were impressed by the quantity and quality of entries for this year’s competition and they did an outstanding job in the process,” said Steve Hodges, chairman of ASFD’s Pinnacle Committee. "We appreciate and thank them for their participation."
