News From Bernhardt Furniture

Regenia Payne has joined Bernhardt Furniture as upholstery fashion coordinator in the brand’s residential upholstery division.

In her new position, Payne will develop upholstery fabric and frame correlations based upon fashion directions and will manage the company’s High Point showroom upholstery presentations.

Payne reports to Roger Turnbow, vice president of merchandising, residential upholstery at Bernhardt, Lenoir, N.C.

“Regenia’s extensive experience in upholstery design, merchandising, and fashion will be a valuable asset in positioning our brand as a design leader in residential upholstered seating,” said Turnbow.

A Feast For Your Wintered Eyes!

I've been checking in with the "Other Resources and Blogroll" page, clicking on Filing Spaces owned by Deepali Kalia. Her pages are filled with colorful fabrics and pillows that contrast with the gray, northwest winters.

Deepali has a post about Woodblock Printing Woodblock printing is one of the oldest methods of textile printing dating back to 300 BC.

Her website carries a picture of her new digs on 9th and Lovejoy and her counter that came from our Landfair Furniture location.

In our March Newsletter we wrote:

Wow!  Got the new fab introductions this week from Bernhardt Interiors.  They have added more greys, stripes, golds, aquas, sumptuous textures and prints to their array.  New colored leathers have appeared which "...makes me wanna Shout."  They would look so good on a Cocktail Ottoman.

Introduce some of these fabrics and leathers into the palette that you are currently working with for the "Wow and Now" factor.

Then I picked up the March 18th issue of Furniture Today  and see this article: "Bright colors jazz up upholstery." I know it's not the best headline, but it tells us that "...people are so sick of what the big box promotional stores are offering-they want something that sets them apart."

Nanotechnology In Textiles

A fabric that can be washed by the sun? That's soon to be possible and will work especially well in places where water is scarce.

Scientists from IIT Delhi and other institutes are working on textiles that wouldn't pick up dirt, and even if they do after prolonged use, the clothes could be "washed" in sunlight . In short, detergents are out!

At the heart of the revolutionary changes is nanotechnology.

Nano technology deals with materials at nano size (1-100 nm) level where the properties of material alter dramatically as their size and shape is changed in the nanometer range.  

The coating of nano titanium dioxide particles in clothes has 'photocatalytic properties' which can break dirt particles in the presence of sun light. 

Other possible uses for nano technology are textiles that are antibacterial, UV (Ultraviolet light) protective and water repellent breathable fabrics. A range of anti-microbial textile finishes and products based on nanosilver have already been commercialized and are finding use in the medical sector such as sutures and wound dressings and other health and hygiene textiles.

Brunschwig & Fils Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy!

Achille Brunschwig established Brunschwig & Fils in 1900 as a tapestry-weaving mill in Aubusson and Bohain, in France. Today, before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, it offered 22,000 fabrics and 1,200 wallpaper designs.

Crains reports:

As part of the restructuring agreement, the furnisher has agreed to be purchased by Kravet, a Syosset, L.I.-based, privately-held distributor of fabrics and home furnishings, in a deal that is subject to a competitive bid process.

Brunschwig does not plan to close any of its 22 showroom locations, which include an outpost at Third Avenue, between East 58th and East 59th streets—the heart of the interior design industry.

The closest showroom was in Seattle.

JAB Anstoetz Grandezza collection

JAB Anstoetz is introducing its 2010 European fabric offerings to the North American marketplace. Inspired by couture fashion in metropolitan cities, the Grandezza collection features modern designs in 15 patterns and 95 colorways. Designs range from jacquards and animal prints to metallics, velvets, and sheers, all exuding a feel of sophistication. The umbrella company of the JAB Anstoetz, Soleil Bleu, and Chivasso brands, JAB recently purchased the Stroheim brand by Fabricut and will continue offering Stroheim’s decorative hardware in addition to its own textile and wallcovering lines.

Introducing Florica

Clarke & Clarke has wowed us again with the introduction of the Florica collection.

Printed on a heavy weight slubby cotton ground, the five patterns in the Florica Collection were inspired by Romany folklore and are available in the fashionable colorways of chocolate/aqua, sky/rouge, chocolate/raspberry, charcoal and citrus.

The interesting scales of the designs are perfectly complimented by a chenille boucle semi plain, which is available in 25 colors and can be used for both drapes and upholstery.

What Is Sensuede By Duralee?

Did you know that Duralee has an upholstery fabric called Sensuede that is eco-friendly? Eco what?

Sensuede is a luxury faux suede entirely made from high-purity recycled polyester (from PET bottles, fabric and apparel). The production process is eco-efficient too. “Given the concern with conserving natural resources and reducing the burden on the environment, it makes sense to be Green” explains the company.

Both sides of the fabric are properly finished “for a smooth drape and easy ability to contour to any shape and style of furniture”: wall-coverings, drapery, bedding, pillows, sofas, loveseats, dining chairs, recliners, handbags, picture frames, etc. From aircraft, cruise ships, yachts and RVs to corporate and executive interiors, restaurants hotels, home theater seating and bar stools.

If you have a dog like we do, you know dogs love to get up on the dofa and you can't always keep their paws clean, It's a dog! With Sensuede from Duralee you can toss the cushion covers in the wash and they're as good as new. Another point to mention, it is generally cheaper by the yard than its competitors.

Duralee Teams With Clarke & Clarke

Duralee has really generated buzz this year so far. In February following the success of his first print collection for Duralee, Thomas Paul expanded his offerings of iconic patterns with Thomas Paul 2. You can see some of his samples in our blog post New From Duralee Fabrics or better yet, come into our showroom.

In April we asked the question What is Ikat? and showed that Duralee is well represented in ikat this design trend.

In June we brought to your attention that the Big Kahuna of Fabric Design, Alfred Shaheen, was coming to Duralee. Alfred Shaheen is the big Kahuna designer of the postwar Hawaiian clothing movement.

We also shared with you that Duralee has just introduced a fantastic new fabric group, "The Wainwright Collection". This is a traditional collection of fabrics with more exciting and up to date colorways.

New From Duralee Fabrics

Thomas Paul! Born and raised in New York City, he's worked for such designers as Bill Blass, Calvin Klein, and DKNY. He started his own business with the Thomaspaul pillow collection in 2001. Since then his line has steadily expanded to include tabletop, stationery, and lamp shades. His ultimate goal is to have products covering every aspect of the home, all with thomaspaul patterns gracing them.

Sofa's Durability Depends On Fabric

Kara Pierce, Senior Design Consultant at The Sofa Company, has written an article titled How to Test My Sofa’s Upholstery Fabric Durability and Strength.

How exactly is a fabric’s durability measured? Most fabrics go by one of two test methods, known as Wyzenbeek and Martindale, to give the fabric an “abrasion” or “double rub” rating. Essentially, the fabric is pulled tight and rubbed in two directions by a standard weight fabric; if two yarn breaks occur, or if noticeable wear is observed, at that point the number of rubs is recorded as the abrasion rating. 30,000 double rubs is considered minimum durability for commercial use; hotels, conference rooms, etc. Between 30,000 and 100,000 is considered heavy duty. Although these tests are only used as tools for predicting wear, it can help when looking at fabrics, to know that the higher the abrasion rating number is, the better it performed on the durability test.

At Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery you will notice that most of the Sherrill fabrics have a "wearability" rating from Heavy and Medium to Light. The Duralee fabrics carry a durabilty rating and the samples will have a "double rub" rating.

It's important for your satisfaction with our furniture that you pair the durability of the fabric with its use. You wouldn't want to use a linen fabric, for example, in the den where the kids wrestle. You also wouldn't want to use a lower quality sofa or chair in a room that gets heavy use.

Rowe: Fully Upholstered Accent Tables.

From Rowe, we have word of a new introduction at High Point, an extension of the upholstery line with the addition of the Iris collection of fully upholstered accent tables.

Stefanie J. Lucas, President & CEO of Rowe Fine Furniture says, "You can achieve a harmonious décor by accenting your sofa with an upholstered table or introduce pattern and color in a subtle way with one of these tables. It's a great way to add a designer accent to your room."

Prior to the debut of these fully upholstered accent tables, consumers would select accent tables made from numerous woods, other natural fibers like bamboo, various metals, glass and manufactured plastics. Duralee Introduces Two Fabric Collections

In July, 2008 we posted that we've added a whole section of Duralee Fabrics so you can see these fine designer fabrics and we added Duralee Fabric memo samples. We also said that we featured the amazingly beautiful fabrics from the Philip Gorrivan Collection of Highland Court.

Since then Duralee has introduced the Courtyard Faux Raffia collection.
