Planning to tackle the hospitality market, this residential upholstery specialist asked an Interior Design Hall of Fame member to quarterback the effort by developing a selection of furniture and fabric. Then, proving that what's at home in the suite can be sweet for the home, CEO Stefanie Lucas brought Karim Rashid for Rowe Furniture to her core constituency at High Point, too. Solid hardwood frames create sculptural silhouettes for the six designs, which include the Fluid sofa and Infinity sectional. Pair them with any of 15 exclusive wovens. They're primarily kinetic patterns in a polyester-cotton blend.

Robb & Stucky, Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy On Friday.

Robb & Stucky, No. 33 on Furniture/Today's Top 100 with 2009 estimated sales of $201 million, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Friday.

Dan Lubner, president of Robb & Stucky's Hospitality Design Division, said "We are endeavoring to locate a buyer that will maintain the company's brand standards, associates team and strong focus on customer needs and service, with minimal impact on operations and stakeholders."

High-end retailer Robb & Stucky carried such brands as Woodard, Lexington and Stanley and many more. They have locations in Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Texas. Real Estate in most of those states have been hit hard.

Twilight Bay By Lexington Is Drawing Raves

In April, Henry Link Trading Co. From Lexington

Lexington Home Brands will undertake what it says is the biggest product introduction in its 77-year history at the April High Point Market with a new brand called Henry Link Trading Co.



The brand will include 180-plus SKUs of bedroom, dining room, accent furniture and upholstery, all within the range of existing Lexington price points.

While the forms of the Henry Link items will be traditional in nature, they'll offer eclectic designs the company says will create excitement in the marketplace and will attract a wide audience, including designers.

The collection also aims to reflect the way consumers are buying furniture today, which is more as individual pieces versus entire suites, said Phil Haney, Lexington president and CEO.

In development for 18 months, the collection also aims to capture the excitement of global travel. The Henry Link Trading Co. logo, a giraffe walking through tall grass, sets the stage for this theme.

The pieces, to be sourced in the Philippines, expand on the global theme with a mix of materials that includes bamboo, rattan, embossed leather, hair over hide, penshell and marble. Finishes also tend to reflect the exotic, with colors such as gloss piano black, rubbed mahogany and gold and silver leaf.

"Over the last several years, sophisticated consumers have become increasingly more eclectic in their tastes, placing greater value on items that feature innovative design and exotic materials," Haney said in a statement. "They are often furnishing their homes with a few pieces at a time rather than all at once, looking for standout pieces that make a personal statement rather than matched suites.

"There is an aspirational element to the trend as well. Henry Link Trading Co. is designed to address the needs of that consumer. While many of them find that time constraints limit their ability to travel the world, they still aspire to invest in signature pieces that showcase the taste and savvy of someone who does."

Anfibio sofa bed???

Ever heard of an Anfibio sofa bed?  I haven't  until now.  It was designed by Alessandro Becchi for Giovannetti, Italy, in 1970.  Only 31,000 of the sofa beds were produced.

A sofa that, when unfolded, becomes a generous double bed. The outer arm and back have a steel structure (within a wrap of polyurethane and dacron) that gives rigidity to the form. The seat unrolls by releasing the side straps, and the back is then folded forward onto the floor to make a low-padded sleeping platform. Commonly upholstered in tan leather, it measures 180cm x 100cm when unfolded.

The sofa won the Compasso d’Oro at the Milan Triennale in 1972.

If you search the web for  "Anfibio sofa bed" you'll find some for sale.  One I found at StyleStore costs just over £3,000 in fabric or an extra £1,200 for leather.  That's over $4,500 in USDs for fabric!

ZGF Wins With John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes At U of O

The University of Oregon John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes was the Education winner in the Interiors Awards 2011:

Replacing an inadequate facility, the 40,000-sq.-ft. building explores the limits of transparency and connectivity while providing a place for the university’s 520 student athletes to meet, study, interact, and form a community. “It’s a place to create a culture,” explains Gene Sandoval, design partner at ZGF. “They can be around their peers and their mentors in a building that celebrates success.”

Based on his theory that learning best occurs in a garden, Sandoval and the ZGF team strove to bring the verdant splendor of Oregon’s Willamette Valley into the building. Utilizing a double-wall façade, the glass structure rests on a table of water surrounded by birch trees. A prismatic vertical stainless-steel screen within the façade provides shading, thermal comfort, heat harvesting, and privacy.

Memory Foam - The Secret Origins

Where did memory foam used in mattresses come from?

Memory foam was actually invented by NASA for the early Astronauts. Their ordeal from extreme accelerations was NASA’s concern. The pillows used are made of the same type of material, but the mattresses are actually only half memory foam due to the high cost of this material. The other half of the sandwich is regular foam.The two sheets are laminated together to form one solid mattress.

The idea is that you sleep on the top memory foam layer and place the regular foam side on the bed frame. It is thick enough so that you don’t notice or feel this difference while lying down.

Friends of ours recently switched from a waterbed to memory foam.The waterbed required too much maintenance and was expensive to heat and maintain. They were willing to pay a higher price for the extra comfort when compared to springs.

"Just Right" Sofa

Did you hear about the man who awoke and found a stranger sleeping on his sofa?

Deputies woke up the man, later identified as Kevin Mace, 41, only to discover that he was intoxicated. Mace lives several trailers away and deputies believe he stumbled into the wrong residence and found a sofa that was "just right" for slumber.

This reminds me of the story of the Dad who comes home from work and wanders into the wrong house because all the houses look the same.  Kevin Mace maybe couldn't tell that he was on the wrong sofa because too many sofas look alike.

Houzz!

Houzz is a wonderful site that many of you have already discovered. According to the website, Houzz "...a community of home design enthusiasts from around the world. It's the online version of cutting pages out of magazines and stuffing them in a folder - but much easier to search, save, and share."

Over 10,000 design professionals have uploaded over 70,000 photos of their work. Beside acting as a scrapbook for homeowners, they can find design professionals in their areas. Inaddition, 150,000+ ideabooks have been created by Houzz members, and new ones are added every minute.

Interior Trends 2011

"At the beginning of June, the designers Patricia Urquiola (Milan) and Defne Koz (Chicago/Milan/Ankara) met up with the designer Harald Gründl (EOOS, Vienna), the textile designer Martin Leuthold (Jakob Schlaepfer, St. Gallen) and the editor Marco Velardi (apartamento, Milan/Barcelona) for a two-day imm cologne Trend Board workshop in Cologne. Here they filtered out four of the most important trends in furniture and interior design – trends that represent the different levels of style and lifestyle. Once again this year, these four interior trends are summed up in a trend book called Interior Trends 2011, complete with informative names, exemplary products and lavishly photographed settings."

The four interior trends for 2011 are:

• Emotional austerity - whether it's the economy or the maturing of the population, there seems to be a philosophical change from getting things to a more Zen-like appreciation of less is more.

  The colors and materials are dominated by nature: wood, leather, felt and plant fibres are complemented by technical fabrics; an earthy olive hue dominates over lush and pale shades of green and is joined by powder shades from rosé to brown.

• Surprising empathy - consumers are pushing their designers to use new materials to come up with something simple but unique to that client.
  

  The dominant colour is a cold grey, accompanied by ash grey and black and brightened up with vibrant dashes of citrus yellow and mandarin orange. A light taupe mediates between grey and white and adds a little softness to the colour scale.

• Re-balancing - Maybe, we could say this concerns consumers looking for comfort and striving for a balance with nature. Think recycling or being eco-minded consumers.
  

  A warm rhubarb-red radiates positive energy and warmth and is combined with creamy-white, corn-yellow and tan shades ranging from light brown all the way to terracotta.

• Transforming perspectives - here we are taking materials we've used in one way and using them differently, with different finishes and new combinations.
  

  A dark plum-blue provides the dominant background for both an artificial lavender shade and a dove-grey with a violet shimmer. Important features are emphasised in a caramel shade with a metallic-brown gleam.

A Turkish man living in Germany with his wife of 18 years went to police for protection from her insatiable appetite for sex, Bild newspaper reported Wednesday.

Deb Seeley's Two Living Rooms

We received a wonderful email yesterday from interior designer Deb Seeley of Deb Seeley Designs LLC

Here are the living rooms I completed not too long ago. You will notice, with the exception of the chaise lounge in the purple room, all the furniture came from your store!!!

A Triple Shot Of Bridget Otto Thursday

Bridget A Otto has outdone herself in today's Homes & Gardens in The Oregonian.

First, she profiles Don and Sally Wolcott who worked with our friend Faith Sheridan of Faith Sheridan Design Group.  The Wolcotts wanted to update their kitchen cabinets and Sheridan recommended cabinetmaker Mel Archer and suggested finishing touches that the Wolcotts love.  The part I like and could use in our kitchen is the under-cabinet power strip made by Task Lighting.  There never seems to be enough electric outlets in our 1929 home and getting more requires punching holes in the walls.

Second,  Otto profiles The Joinery on SE Woodstock. For 30 years The Joinery takes hardwood trees and makes distinctive furniture.

Third, in Modern Geometry Ian and Tonia Kovtunovich lived in an 800 sq foot home in N Portland and needed more space.  They hired Hiromi Ogawa of Ogawa Fisher Architects to help them with an addition.  The story shows how an architect works with clients.  I love the closet in the mater bedroom.  The head board serves a dual purpose of hiding the closet.  Tonia didn't like closed closet doors.  They give her the creeps.  The do me, too.  Many were the times I went to my second floor bedroom of my parent's home and found the doors to the eaves open.  It gave me the creeps!  The closet idea could work very well in a bedroom that needs more closet space.

Frederic Zimmer Studio/Furniture and Decoration

Back in September we posted about Iron Doors.  We wrote then,

We love front doors! When on vacation what draws the eye of the photographer?  It's the doors in the walls where you can only imagine what life is like beyond the address on the gate.

We came across some more fabulous doors and gates from Frederic Zimmer:

Brunschwig & Fils Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy!

Achille Brunschwig established Brunschwig & Fils in 1900 as a tapestry-weaving mill in Aubusson and Bohain, in France. Today, before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, it offered 22,000 fabrics and 1,200 wallpaper designs.

Crains reports:

As part of the restructuring agreement, the furnisher has agreed to be purchased by Kravet, a Syosset, L.I.-based, privately-held distributor of fabrics and home furnishings, in a deal that is subject to a competitive bid process.

Brunschwig does not plan to close any of its 22 showroom locations, which include an outpost at Third Avenue, between East 58th and East 59th streets—the heart of the interior design industry.

The closest showroom was in Seattle.

Phillips Collection announces the prolific Karla d'Lara Collection

Phillips Collection’s gives us a sneak peek of their most exciting collection to date. Introducing Mexican artist Karla d’Lara.

In spirit of bringing artists to center stage in the furnishings community, we are announcing an exclusive and grand introduction of her sculptures, tables, and accessories for 2011. During the upcoming furniture market in Las Vegas, we will have one hundred and fifty of her works on display at one of our flagship showrooms at the World Market Center (Suite A202).

Karla began to study photography as a teenager during summer trips abroad, and it became her first great passion. After taking advanced courses and accumulating plenty of experience, she traveled through Europe, Asia, and the Americas capturing the images of different cultures. Karla is able to amalgamate her ideas with the help of skilled and exacting craftsmen, who have shared their homegrown techniques from workshops in Tonala, Jalisco, a hotbed of artists and great authors. A case in point is artist Salvador Rabelero, an expert in ceramics, glass, pigment combinations, acrylic paintings and mixed techniques. Today he is Karla’s inseparable partner in artistic creation.

It's Bridget Otto Thursday!

Sara Ledoux and two of her children, Elizabeth and Alexander, enjoy some family time.

Bridget A Otto tells us today that Sara and Steve moved into their NW home that "the previous owner had done a precise and careful update to the property." Sara added color in the formal dining and living rooms, but something was missing. Enter interior designer Kimberlee Jaynes to take it to the next level.

That's what so great about using a designer.  Through their education and experience, they can get you the "final layer."

Otto quotes Jaynes:

"That's one of the things that is challenging, the final layer," she says. "You don't see the importance until it is done. Before, you can't figure out what's wrong with the room, and you don't want to spend any more money, but something's not right."

For those of you following local sports Kimberlee Jaynes is married to the "Godfather", Dwight Jaynes, and is referred to as the "goddess" by sports fans.

2011 Color Of The Year: Honeysuckle

Pantone has announced that the color of the  year is Honeysuckle:

How To Choose a Bar Stool

When it comes to choosing a bar stool, Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery in Portland can help you choose the right height and style, made in both metal and wood.

Bar heights range from 40 to 42 inches and counters are generally about 36 inches. You need about ten inches under for your legs under the bar or counter, so your seat heights will vary. Generally, seat heights for bars are about 30 inches and counters about 24 to 26 inches. There is even a spectator height that some prefer.



Stools can then be backless, stationary or swivel, and swivel with memory, meaning it returns to its original position. They can be captain chairs or have no arms.

We sell a lot of Tempo products because they come in a variety of styles in powdered coated metal that is durable and a great buy for the price. Any finish is available and in any seat height. Our most popular is Brazilia which is great for condos in its transitional style. Sometimes when you have wooden cabinets and wood floors, it's nice to change it up with metal bar stools.

Landfair Furniture also carries Dinec in all seat heights at a higher price and Stanley which is a good value, however it is not as customizable.
